ALMOST ILLUMINATED: EDWARD BERNSTEIN

Almost Illuminated:Edward Bernstein is a retrospective of work created during Professor  Bernstein’s tenure as artist and educator at Indiana University from 1991-2013. It is shown at the Grunwald Gallery, Hope School of Art Fine Arts, January 17-February 14, 2014. Hours12-4 Tuesday-Saturday.  Ed will give a short Gallery talk at 5:30 January 17 prior to the Opening Reception 6:00- 8:00pm

“My work is prefaced on ideas using object, history and memory. Though centered in print-media, this retrospective includes sculpture and mixed media drawing. 

Common threads include dramatic play of light and dark; references to and reverence for historical Western art, particularly Italian, within a contemporary post-modern context which hopefully adds timelessness, irony, and on occasion, humor. I like to work from 3 into 2 dimensions, often with direct or indirect references to important socio-political issues usually using photo based imagery from specific places where I have traveled and lived, as well as  objects I have seen or made. 

Because I am interested in the interface between technology and tradition both aesthetics and technique,  I am continually pushing the boundaries of printmaking.

Eric Botbyl is a full time studio potter. He graduated from Union University in 2001 with a BA in Ceramics and has been working with clay ever since. In addition to exhibiting his work, he has written articles for Ceramics Monthly and Number Magazine, taught workshops at numerous universities and art centers, and opened his own studio for community clay classes. In 2008 Eric and his wife, Jill, opened the Companion Gallery in Humboldt, TN where they now represent over a dozen artists.

The Print Exchange 2014

500 Printmakers, 12 Prints

We invite 500 printmakers to join our annual worldwide print exchange. This years theme is "Let This Be a Sign..." Each participant will create an edition of twelve prints to submit and will receive ten unique printsmade by strangers in return! Of the two remaining, one will go into our archive at Brooklyn Art Library and the other will be used in an exhibition here in New York.

We can't wait to start sharing and swapping another round of incredible prints this year - to participate, just sign up on this page and you'll be sent the official rule card - then, get printing!

Call‐For‐Entries: The Temporary Show
“Archival.” “Acid‐free.” “Neutral pH.” We usually take steps to ensure artwork stands the test of time, but sometimes truly remarkable things only exist for a short while. Let’s call attention to the ephemeral: that of which is temporary, fleeting or transitory. Whitdel Arts is currently accepting submissions and proposals for an exhibition centered around the idea of impermanence. This exhibition will feature artwork that changes over time or explores the concept of ephemera.
Exhibition dates: March 7 ‐ April 19, 2014 Reception: Friday, March 7, 7‐10pm
Criteria: Whitdel Arts welcomes submissions of 2D or 3D pieces in all media. Submissions must focus on the idea of impermanence and ephemeral qualities, so pieces may or may not be site‐specific. Artwork may also potentially change/evolve/decay/grow or deteriorate over the course of the exhibition. Proposals for work to be created for this exhibition will also be accepted. Work which already exists must have been created within the last 2 years.
Entry Fee: $15 for non‐members. Free for members of Whitdel Arts. A $24 annual Whitdel Arts membership can be purchased through PayPal at: www.whitdelarts.com/membership/.
Submissions: All entries must be submitted via email. No mailed in entries, slides or CDs will be accepted. Entries can be submitted to temporaryshow@whitdelarts.com. Each artist can submit up to 3 works, with one overall jpg image for each work and one detail image for each work, if necessary. If submitting a proposal, please include a detailed description of the work to be created, along with any reference images and sketches.
Images must be in:

• ●  No more than 2 mb
  
• ●  Longest dimension should be at 1000 pixels (maximum)
  
• ●  Name each image as follows: lastname_firstname_entrynumber.jpg (example: king_jamie_01.jpg,

  In addition, a corresponding slide list must be uploaded. On the slide list, please include:

  Deadline: Submissions of images and/or proposals must be received by no later than January 10, 2014.
  Artists will be notified of jurying results no later than January 24, 2014 via email.
  

(The Important Fine Print You Need To Know:)
Sales: For artwork sold during the exhibition, Whitdel Arts takes a 33% commission fee of the sales price, regardless of
other gallery affiliation. Artwork need not be for sale.
Work Drop Off & Installation:
Accepted work must be delivered or hand‐delivered to Whitdel Arts by February 22, 2014. Site‐specific work to be installed by the artist can be installed during installation time for the exhibition. These specific details will be communicated to the artists by the exhibition coordinator.
Artists living in the Metro Detroit area are responsible for transporting their works to Whitdel Arts by the drop‐off date and completing installation (if installing the work themselves) at least 2 days before the exhibition opening on March 7, 2014.
Artists living outside Metro Detroit and shipping their work to Whitdel Arts are responsible for making sure their work arrives by February 22. 2014. Detailed instructions and/or diagrams for installation, as well as any specific hardware, material, etc. needed for installation must accompany the work. Please include visual photographs of how the final installation is to look.
Artists having their work delivered by a third party carrier are responsible for all shipping costs and insurance. Return shipping must be included with the work upon its arrival at Whitdel Arts. Whitdel Arts will not ship any artwork back to the artists until return shipping is received. Shipped artwork must come in a sturdy, reusable shipping container; please no packing peanuts or glass. Please include instructions for installation.
Whitdel Arts reserves the right to omit any accepted work not ready for installation or if it is not as described in the artist’s submission.
All artists are responsible for insurance of their work while is it at Whitdel Arts between the drop off date and the day it is picked up/returned.
Specific times for drop‐off dates, installation schedule and shipping information will be sent to artists via email. For questions or additional inquiries, please email JenClare Gawaran at jenclare@whitdelarts.com.
Work Pick‐up: Unsold, hand‐delivered artwork must be picked up by the artist by April 20, 2014. Whitdel Arts will return shipped artwork that has return postage included. Whitdel Arts will not ship any artwork back to the artist until return postage is received. After 30 days after the end of the exhibition, any unclaimed artwork, sold or unsold, remaining in the gallery becomes the property of Whitdel Arts. Whitdel Arts reserves the right to dispose of any artwork remaining in the gallery after 30 days after the end of the exhibition.

Veil

An installation by Amelia Briggs

Box Gallery presents Veil, an installation by painter Amelia Briggs. Briggs examines ideas of perception, and the distortion caused by our previous experiences, narratives, and existing ideologies.  She states “I am interested in this cycle of perception as a betrayal of logic, acting as a veil, and ultimately obstructing our view.” Briggs, who is primarily an oil painter, focuses mainly on the human form as her subject matter. For this installation, she seems to magically transform one of her paintings into the third dimension.

Reception Fri. 12/6 5-7 PM. Exhibition will run 12/2-12/16.
