Illinois State University faculty and staff are working hard at recruiting graduate applications and had a good pool of graduate printmaking applicants this year. However, we find ourselves without an incoming graduate for the fall 2015 semester. One school had a better assistantship, another had a larger program, another had a smaller program or was in a better place – we have all dealt with the many reasons why an applicant might pick one graduate school over another.
In the hope that we may still find the right person for our program, we are contacting you. Perhaps you have a student who missed application deadlines, or for whatever reason, did not apply to graduate programs but is ready.
Illinois State University offers a full tuition waiver, a studio space, and a 20 hr/week assistantship with a stipend for all six semesters of this three-year MFA program. The 20 hrs/week is divided between the lithography area, the intaglio area, and/or Normal Editions Workshop. Students assist in the classroom, maintain facilities, and learn collaborative print skills with visiting artists. Students may also teach their own course if they prove willing and capable.
For information about our program, facilities, and faculty, please consult the attached document. You may also visit our website and our facebook page:
Inquiries are welcome and applications will be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled. Please contact us with information regarding potential applicants.
Sincerely,

ILLINOIS STATE
UNIVERSITY
NORMAL, ILLINOIS
Program
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Printmaking at Illinois
State University (ISU) is a professional degree program emphasizing both theory
and practice in the production, history, and teaching of the visual arts. Sixty credit hours of study are divided
between courses in studio arts, art history, internships/apprenticeships, and
electives. Required printmaking
classes include upper level courses in Intaglio (Art 345), Lithography (Art
346), Advanced Printmaking (Art 347), and independent studies (Art 444). The program culminates in a
comprehensive exhibition, an oral examination, and a written thesis.
Philosophy
MFA candidates in printmaking will be expected to
demonstrate artistic proficiency in printmaking and are encouraged to explore
conceptual directions in other media.
While Lithography and Intaglio are significant components of the
printmaking program, the faculty teach, support, and critique many other
printmaking techniques such as relief, monotype, and collagraph. The MFA program at ISU encourages
interdisciplinary explorations and students frequently explore sculpture,
performance, and instillation as part of their printmaking studies. Along with involvement with faculty and
staff from ISU, graduate students have the opportunity to interact with
visiting artists through the Visiting Artist Seminar, individual and group
critiques, lectures, demonstrations, and print publishing projects.
Facilities
Printmaking features two classroom/workshop spaces of
approximately 2,500 square feet each.
Some of the available resources include: five etching presses of
different sizes, three lithography presses with mobile ventilation units,
vented copper etching facilities, multiple exposure units for
photo-lithographic and intaglio applications, a scanner and large-scale digital
printer, vented u-v free room, and letterpress equipment including an electric
Vandercook press.
Private studio space is provided in the grad house, an
off-campus facility with shared critique/installation spaces and a small wood
shop. Graduate students have
24-hour access to the grad house and the art building/print shops.
Normal Editions
Workshop
Normal Editions Workshop (NEW) is a non-profit printmaking
workshop and research facility founded in Illinois State University in 1976. This
is an enrichment program for the education of students and augments the educational
goals of the University. NEW
provides opportunities to work with and observe visiting artists within a
professional workshop situation, works of art for study collections and
traveling exhibitions, publishing and contract printing services for
professional artists. Students
also have opportunities to participate in the NEW special projects class, and
assist in the printmaking area’s annual sale and exhibition. NEW has a motorized lithography press, preparation and printing areas,
office space, print storage files, and a general work area.

Solutions for screenprinting ink problems
There are times when printing w/acrylic inks that they build up on the paper and become plasticly & tacky.
The way I've avoided this in most instances is to start w/Lyntex base in for all inks and they seem to trap into the paper better w/a nice matte finish.
The problem seems to arise more when overprinting opaque colors that have white or back in them. This is a far cry from the flat finish one could get from solvent based inks. It's as if Hunt Speedball overprint varnish was used and the surface behaves like bad acrylic paint.
We use Hunt Speedball Acrylic inks in combination w/Lyntex and Createx peigments to move hue. Inks are modified w/isopropyl alcohol or deionized water and glycerine us used as a retarder.
Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.
